Belly dump for fun and profit
I am a retired over the road truck driver who got tired of never being home. The only problem was what could I do locally to supplement my social security? We live in a small rural community that we moved to so we could take care of a family member who was very ill. We liked it here so we stayed, the only problem was what could I find in a town of less than 200 people? Sure, I could commute 60 miles to the closest bigger town and hopefully find something to do, but that would take me away from home again, I still had my CDL and a friend of mine told me about dirt hauling. There was a local company that needed CDL drivers to drive belly dump trucks for road construction hauling material to make asphalt and hauling the asphalt itself. This kept me at home and supplemented my social security very well. It is seasonal work and weather driven so I find that I have a lot of time to take care of projects at home. I have found that rain days can be very productive. I have been doing this for 3 years now and have been able to pay for nearly 15 acres of land and an old school building that we have fixed up to live in. The good thing about this is it all payed for, land prices are low here. One of the things I found out is that if you have a CDL, you can live anywhere and find work, you don't have to go over the road, there are plenty of good local driving jobs available anywhere you live, even in Lelia Lake, Texas. Road construction happens everywhere and drivers are needed to carry the needed material to the jobsites. Anybody can get a CDL, it's not hard and there are jobs everywhere for good drivers. If you like to drive and don"t mind getting a little dirty once in a while you may find that this is just the ticket for you. Remember, if you eat it, wear it, drive it, and yes, drive on it, it was delivered by a truck. |
